The ‘Toddler’ stage is around 1-2 years of age. Parents often avoid having photos taken of their toddler as they feel that they’ll be uncooperative and misbehave but that’s all part of this stage. The frustration and tantrums are normal as they’re finding their place in this big, scary world. Have very low expectations trying to get a toddler to pose as they’re going to do what they want anyway. Movement is the key with toddler photography and going with the flow, this can achieve more authentic and unique portraits. This is where they find their independence and want to do things for themselves as they’re bursting with energy and want to explore.
Let them play, run, jump and climb! Toddlers are full of energy, there’s no point in trying to make them stay still. Give them something to do where they’re moving! Here’s a couple of ideas to keep your Toddler occupied:
Running after your toddler, this always gives lots of natural smiles!
Reading a book to your child
Cuddles with Mum and Dad
Eskimo kisses with Mum and Dad
Group family hugs and Mum and Dad kisses on each of the toddler’s cheeks
Fly them high like a plane above your shoulders or sit them on your shoulders and jump (this always brings the laughter)
Bring a stuffed toy , especially comforting for shy children
One on one time with each parent. You can tickle and play or have a quiet moment with your toddler
Peekaboo games
Place your toddler upside down, it always produces those belly laughs!
Bubbles
Exploring nature
Piggy back rides
Kicking a ball or digging sand at the beach
Playing on playground equipment
So don’t worry about how your toddler will behave as I have no expectations and try to make it fun for them. This gorgeous family decided to have a photo shoot with their 2 year old toddler before baby number two arrives. He’s so cute!
