What to Look For When Hiring a Professional Photographer!

So you’ve made the decision to have some professional family photos taken. What now? How do you find the right photographer for you? It can be quite overwhelming when you see how many photographers are out there but there’s a few things to look out for:-

Photographer’s Style:

There are lots of different styles of photography such as Lifestyle, Posed with props, Documentary, etc. We all have different taste. It’s a good idea to browse social media and compare different photographer’s styles to see which one resonates with you. Do your research as you want to find a photographer that has a style that in years to come, when you view those photos, they’ll still bring you so much joy. You don’t want to look back at them and think what was I thinking? Unfortunately in this digital age, anyone can call themselves a photographer. Look at different photographer’s websites, do they have consistently good photos in their client galleries for you to view? Professional photographers spend a lot of time designing their websites to attract their ideal client and put their heart and soul into their client galleries. If a photographer says they photograph anything, be wary! Professional photographers usually only specialise in their particular genres. A landscape photographer is very different from a newborn photographer.

What is Your Budget:

You need to have some idea of what you’d like to spend. Photographers have different packages and ways of pricing. I hate to say it but this is one occasion that you get what you pay for. Always look at a photographer’s work before you book them and don’t base your decision on price. Some photographers supply prints with digital files, others have a Session Fee which doesn’t include any digital or print product. Where are you going to use the images? It’s a good idea to think about what you would like to do with your photos, ie. album, framed, individual prints, canvas, etc. This is an additional cost. A Session Fee incorporates the photographer’s time, talent, travel and editing time only, it does not include print products. A Session Fee might only be $150 but there is a minimum spend of $1500 on print product with some photographer’s pricing.

Read Photographer’s Reviews:

This is a biggy!! You should be able to read a a number of reviews on either Google, their website or Facebook page. Always read their ‘About Page’ on their website as it should reveal their passion for what they do and tell you about their background.

Enquire:

Once you find a photographer’s style that you like, enquire with them and ask the tough questions as it saves any confusion and makes it clear how it all works right from the start. It’s a good idea to speak with them directly as this can help you get to know them and if they’re a right fit for you. You can ask such questions as how do you control unruly children, how do you sooth a crying baby, do you offer styling advice, do you supply digitial files, how do you get those natural smiles, can they visit your home, etc.

So once you’ve booked your session, trust the process and your photographer as they’ve done it all before. Work together to create those beautiful images, wonderful experience and lifetime memories.
