SO HOW DOES A NEWBORN PHOTO SHOOT WORK?

My style of newborn photography would be called ‘Lifestyle’, a natural, baby led way to photograph your newborn baby, capturing the raw emotions that you have for this miracle that you created.

Your new baby’s newborn days will be fleeting, you won’t want to forget them as they’ll be over in the blink of an eye. All the tiny details, the yawns, the squishiness and snuggles in your arms….these are the moments that you’ll look back on and want to remember, especially just how tiny they were.

Once I receive your booking, I’ll pencil your due date in my diary and leave room around that date to accommodate your shoot as babies arrival dates can be unpredictable. I can either visit you in your home or if it’s more convenient I have a home studio in Highett all set up for your baby and family’s comfort.

When I Arrive at Your Home

I’ll have a quick look to see which rooms have the best available light. You might think that I’m moving in as I arrive with my newborn posing bean bag plus a big linen bag full of blankets, wraps and the cutest little onesies. These are for you to choose from, all in neutral colours which are perfect for flattering skin tones for both you and your baby. Firstly, I’ll get to know your family, especially older siblings and may ask them to show me their room to help them feel more comfortable with me. Older siblings love helping me set up my beanbag, feeling like they’re important making a special bed for their younger brother or sister.

Comfort of your Baby

A clean nappy and a full tummy will help them get to sleep but if they’re not settling I have a few tricks up my sleeve to help sooth them. I also go with the flow…..in other words let your baby run the shoot. If they need to be fed, burped, rocked or just held then that’s what we’ll do. I don’t try to force your baby into difficult poses that babies don’t do naturally. It’s a good idea to feed your baby prior to me arriving and try to keep them awake if you can. It also helps to have the room temperature between 24 - 28 deg as babies can’t yet regulate their body temperature the way adults do, as they haven’t yet developed sweat glands. This will help keep your baby comfortable and warm.

Posing Prompts

There’s no need to worry about what to do, I’ll gently direct you with certain prompts to obtain a good selection in your final gallery. I want you to feel non stressed and relaxed, to forget about the camera and focus on each other and the joy you are all feeling introducing a new baby to the family. There will be lots of snuggles, each of you interacting with the baby on your own and with each other to capture those moments of love and connection.

HOW LONG IS A SHOOT?

I’ll take all the time necessary to obtain the photos that you’ll want. Don’t worry if your baby needs feeding, burping or just rocking to sleep, this is what it’s all about having a newborn baby. We go by their schedule so there’s no time limit, as long as your baby is comfortable, that is all that is important.

I feel so priviledged when old clients invite me back to photograph a new addition to the family. I photographed their older son 3 years ago as a baby and what a cutie he is now at 3 years of age. Congratulations with the arrival of another little baby boy!
