When families book a family photo shoot, one question that often comes up is the difference between Lifestyle Photography and Documentary Photography. Both styles focus on capturing real moments and genuine connection, but they approach storytelling in slightly different ways.
A recent session with a beautiful new family and their 11-week-old baby boy shows my style of Lifestyle Photography.
We began their session at the beach, making the most of the fresh sea air and open space, before heading back to their home for some more intimate moments together as a family.
What is Lifestyle Photography?
Lifestyle photography captures natural moments with gentle guidance from me. The aim is to create images that feel relaxed and authentic while still being thoughtfully composed.
At the beach, this style worked beautifully. I encouraged the family to simply walk along the shoreline together, cuddle their baby boy close, and enjoy being together in the moment as the beach is their happy place. Nothing felt posed or forced, just small prompts to help create beautiful, natural images that reflect the love between them.
Lifestyle photography allows families to interact naturally while I quietly guide the scene so the light, connection and composition come together in a meaningful way.
SO What is Documentary Photography then?
Documentary photography is a style of photography that focuses on capturing real life exactly as it unfolds, without directing, posing, or interfering with the moment. The photographer becomes a quiet observer, documenting genuine interactions, emotions, and everyday moments as they naturally happen.
Rather than asking people to look at the camera or move into a certain position, documentary photography allows life to simply unfold. The goal is to tell an honest story, the small moments, gestures, and connections that truly reflect a person, family, or situation.
After our time at the beach, we returned to the family’s home where the atmosphere became much quieter and more intimate.
I photographed the small, everyday moments that make up life with a young baby:
Mum softly talking to her baby boy while holding him close
Dad gently rocking him
The way their baby stretched and kicked happily on the bed
Quiet cuddles as he settled in their arms
These moments weren’t directed, but I simply placed them in the best light and backdrop and let the emotion flow.
Why 11 Weeks is a Beautiful Age to Photograph
Many people think baby photography needs to happen in the first two weeks, but babies at around 10–12 weeks old are such a wonderful age to photograph.
At this stage they are:
More alert and aware of their surroundings
Beginning to make eye contact with their parents
Showing the early signs of smiles and personality
Still loving the comfort of being held close
This creates sessions that are full of connection, interaction and genuine emotion.
Capturing Your Family’s Story
Whether we begin outdoors at the beach or in the comfort of your own home, my goal is always the same, to capture your family in a natural, honest way.
The love.
The quiet moments.
The tiny details that make this stage of life so special.
These early months with your baby pass so quickly, but photographs allow you to hold onto those memories forever.
