If you scroll through most family photos you’ll usually find thousands of photos of the children.
First smiles, first steps, bath time, bedtime cuddles. messy breakfasts, school drop offs, tiny hands holding onto bigger ones.
Somewhere behind almost all of those moments is Mum. She’s the one taking the photo.
Mums are often the memory keepers of the family. They document everything because they know how quickly childhood passes, but in doing so, they unintentionally disappear from the story themselves.
One day when children look back through their family photos, they won’t care whether Mum had her hair done, whether she had lost the baby weight, or whether she felt tired that day. They’ll simply want to see her there.
The way she looked at them.
The way she held them.
The way she loved them.
Why Mums Avoid Being in Photos
There are so many reasons mums step out of the frame.
“I don’t feel photogenic.”
“I’ll wait until I lose weight.”
“I’m too tired.”
“The kids are the important ones.”
“I hate having my photo taken.”
As women and mothers, we can be incredibly critical of ourselves. We notice the exhaustion in our eyes, the changes in our bodies, the imperfections nobody else sees, but children don’t see any of that.
They see comfort. Safety. Warmth. Love.
To them, those ordinary moments with Mum are the most important memories of all.
Your Children Need Photos With You In Them
Not just posed smiling-at-the-camera photos, but real moments.
The cuddles.
The laughter.
The way your child wraps their arms around your neck.
The way you brush their hair away from their face.
The way they fit perfectly into your arms right now.
These are the photographs your children will treasure one day.
Photos become more valuable with time. What feels ordinary now will eventually become irreplaceable.
Family Photos Are Part of Your Legacy
So many mums tell me they almost cancelled their session because they didn’t feel ready and afterwards they’re always grateful they didn’t.
Years from now, these photographs won’t just be for you, they’ll be for your children. They’ll become part of your family history, proof of your love, your presence, and this season of life together.
Your children deserve to have memories of you in their childhood, not just behind the camera.
You Don’t Need to Be Perfect
You don’t need the perfect outfit.
You don’t need to look a certain way.
You don’t need to wait for the “right time.”
There will always be reasons to put it off, but your children already think you are enough exactly as you are.
The most meaningful family photos are rarely the perfect posed ones. They’re the real moments - connection, emotion, laughter, closeness. That’s what I focus on during my sessions. Natural, heartfelt photographs that include everyone, especially Mum.
You matter in your family story too.
